I would like a dedicated music and podcast player that works well with my entire iTunes library...which just leaves me with the iPod Touch. So I’m currently eyeing the 128GB 6G.

I never bothered with streaming services, and don’t intend on starting now. Nothing is going to be synced - no iMessage, no photos, etc. Only music and podcasts, manually synced via iTunes. In fact, that might be the only time I would turn on WiFi.

So assuming all I do is listen to music or podcasts, how much runtime can I expect? Two possible scenarios: no wireless antenna running and listening via wired, or listening via Bluetooth.

When new, my 128GB Touch from July 2015 would only get 5 hours from fully charged to shut-down (give or take a few minutes) when playing locally stored music. I tested this multiple times over the first few months of ownership These were my settings:

- iOS 8.x
- Screen off, or at low brightness (less than 30%)
- All notifications and background process off
- Bluetooth and wifi off
- Shuffle on, with a 7000+ song library
- Medium volume, both with or without wired headphones

I am still on iOS 8 and haven't tested the battery lately, but it is and always has been garbage. (my old 3rd Gen Touch used to get 20+ hours when new)

Consider this, the Touch website still states "Music playback time: up to 40 hours".

^ This pretty much, the thing even on stand by is consuming tons of battery.

14 hours ALAC files offline playback on mine

14 hours and then I go to sleep. I don't know how long it really lasts. iOS 12 may have improved it.

Turn off automatic updates. That is the big power drain. You want to run them manually when plugged into a charger.

???

BTW, I recently timed 20 hours on my Touch 6 over iOS 12.1.1

All notifications, background processing and automatic updates are off. In addition, I have remove every app I can that I don't use (not all apps can be removed).
