Why bother using a bluetooth based system when cellular/gps solutions with real time tracking have been around a couple decades for a reasonable cost.

To me this is the best use case.
I'd just toss an iPhone mini in the bag instead. I can listen in on them, track them with more precision etc.

Or just call the FBI and let them use their suite of tech-toys and know-how to handle it.

I think the real question is how long until there are android apps that detect Airtags? At least enough to know that there is one within BT range.

There are much better trackers to use than an airtag and note, such better trackers have been around for decades, also note they are much smaller and provide for longer distance than a bluetooth airtag does.
