How long can we have the iphone 4s brand new in the box till we have to activate it.

i meant if we want to hold off the activation process , how long can we wait

OP, you can activate at any time, be it after you get home from the Apple Store or a year later.

Dumb question, but you have to activate it through iTunes for your monthly service to begin correct?

How long are you trying to ride out your other contract? ;) I'm not sure if your plan will work. Keep us posted! :D

Why wouldn't it work? Does the billing on the account start as soon as you order it?

Are you sure that's right? You are being billed for a week or so of service and you don't even have the phone yet. That can't be right.

my contract been up for a long time, the reason i ask is because i actually want to keep my jailbroken 3gs to use it for internet , who knows how long the 4s will take to get jailbroken, but i want to have the phone in hand just incase someone is able to find a way to jailbrake then ill switch phones.

Ps. Maybe am just putting to much thought and just pissed at the fact am gonna lose the 20 bucks i wasted on mywi.... till a new jailbreak for 5.0 comes out.

I've already inquired about this.

You can pre-order, including porting your number, and nothing takes place until you first turn on your iphone and follow the activation instructions.

My contract with t-moblie expires on the 16th (lucky me), so I plan on having the iphone in hand already on that date. Then I can activate the phone, while at the same time my t-mobile contract will be canceled due to the porting of the number.

So you're saying you could preorder the 4S tonight, get it next Friday and wait until December to activate it and you won't get a bill from your carrier of choice until then? Your service would not start until you activate the phone?

I bought hubs an iphone 4 for Christmas last year on my line Dec. 8 and put it under the tree and he didn't open it and activate it until Dec 26th.

That's how it works. But that iPhone and you and it's two year contract will always be attached. Once the the phone is turned on, it has to be activated, then the contract starts.

Do you still activate via iTunes or have I heard something about wireless activation this year?

Also worth remembering that the warranty starts on the day of purchase not the day of activation.

All I remember about what I heard was that nothing happens until you first turn on the phone and follow the activation instructions. That made be believe that a computer was not necessary, but perhaps iTunes might be involved.

I can let you know how it works on the 16th:D.

That seems to be the case. Good point.

Interesting! When a person orders the phone and receives it, one does not pay for the monthly bill until the phone is activated?

Makes sense, doesn't it?

How can they charge you for a week of service when you don't even have the phone?
