Hi, Just bought a new MBPr 13inch - loving it - but decided to spend extra cash boosting the specs than on the protection plan.

The problem is, having owned three macs before, I know how valuable to protection plan is - but if you don't buy it when you buy the product, how long do you have? Or did I have to buy it with the machine?

Thanks in advance for any help

SandboxGeneral believes correctly. ;)

Last year, I bought AC from B&H Photo 2 days before the warranty on a rMBP expired - it's the day you buy AC that's important, not when you add the AC to your device. FYI, keep your receipts for both purchases - Apple may ask proof for Mac purchase (if you didn't buy it at Apple). The AC ships with explicit instructions on how to apply your AC to your Mac - it's QED.

BTW, I found B&H Photo generally offers the lowest price on AC ($255 shipped including 2-day shipping for AC on my 15" rMBP vs. $349 from Apple), assuming you're in one of their shipped-to countries. I found their prices lower than local CL, and I'll buy from them again...
