How long does it take for preorder cancellation ?

I just got off the phone with Sprint trying to cancel my preorder as I now want to get Applecare+. They said while a form will be submitted there is no guarantee that it will be cancelled and I just have to keep checking the order status and decline to accept if it is delivered.
I wonder what other people's experience are ?
