I've had this problem for a while now. I turn on Time Machine and it updates to an external fire wire drive. Every time it updates it scans the drive and then starts backing everything up. But once every thing's copied it keeps on going, right now it's saying "988.8MB of 988.8MB Copied" but the icon is still spinning, and has been for 10 mins after the copying was done.

How long should it be doing this for?

Relatively large backups like that can go for a while. After I installed Office 2008 it did a 1.2 GB backup and was finalizing that backup for at least 15 minutes. It takes a while, but it will stop.

Honestly I couldn't tell you. I hardly pay attention to Time Machine. I only noticed a lot of activity if large files are created / moved / installed into directories I do have Time Machine backup.

I agree your issue sounds awkward but would assume it'd eventually fix itself... how's your TM behaving now?
