So I got my 60GB iPod Photo today.
I'm installing the software now (Windows but that shouldn't matter.) at one point it prompted to format the drive which I clicked format. The progress bar is moving, get to the end, and starts over. Its been doing this for close to an hour and a half which is way longer then most laptop hard drive's I've formatted take. Obviously this is going to take longer then your experiences since we are talking a 60Gb drive but I'm wondering how long it took to format your iPod so I can get a rough idea of if this is an all night job.

you just spent 600 dollars to format an ipod an install windows on it? beyond me.. use it for photos and music man, if u wanna store files its already formated for file storage? y u reformatting it for?

From what I've heard, expect a long night. The 60GB drive isn't stunningly fast, and the iPod isn't the world's speediest formatter. And note that it is a complete reformat of the drive into a different style, so there's no quick way to do it.

On the plus side, once you've done this, you won't have to wait again. File transfer and sync speeds are pretty good.

my 15gb takes about 30min to format (surprisingly regularly but i use it as a hdd a lot:confused:)but i dont know about the speed on the 60gb

I'm simply following what the directions said. Popped in the CD....the auto install starts up....The first thing it says is plug in the iPod....Then it tells me I need to format the drive and to click format which I did and that is what I've been sitting here doing for the last 2.5 hours. The progress bar advances until it hits the end and then starts over again as if in a loop. About 15 minutes ago I slapped my ear against the iPod. Either it’s got the world's quietest hard drive or it’s not doing anything. My hearing is good enough that I usually can hear any hard drive being accessed. So *shrugs* It would be nice if there was an actual progress bar on the iPod instead of just the colorful do not disconnect symbol.

PS- The interface I'm using is a 6-pin firewire through my Creative Audigy sound card. Maybe its not happy with the SC? *sighs* Think I'm going to go to bed and let it run overnight. If it isn’t done by morning I'll know I have a problem.

hes not installing windows on it, he ment that he was using a windows computer to format it. i dont know what to say about the formatting time though, thats beyond me. i wouldnt think it would take that long. if its not done in the morning, i would think it was your soundcard though...even though that shouldnt make a difference
