I'm using Mac Mail and it takes upwards of 30 secs for mail to be sent - this is on a broadband connection and just normal text with no attachments or anything.
 
The specs of your machine (although this is highly unlikely), the program you're using, what you're sending, and the speed of your internet all play a part in how fast it takes to send the email.

It has always taken around 5 seconds or less for me regardless of the computer I used.
