How long should a MBP battery last, on average?

I just got a refurbished 15" MBP (2008). The battery is at 90% of total capacity (according to coconut battery), and the battery has only completed 34 loadcycles. It doesn't seem to last as long as I expected, especially when playing video. I know the brand new MBPs get much better battery life, but what should I expect from a 2008 MBP? Is 2-3 hours normal? Are there ways to extend battery life?
