I have a general rule to never buy hardware in succession. So since I'm on a Macbook Rev A with Core Duo, I am skipping the Core 2 Duos and won't buy a new macbook until the Quad Core Notebook chips come out. I read online they won't be standard until mid 2009...does this apply for apple notebooks as well?

wow, lol dont you thin that quad core on a macbook is a little overboard. think of the battery it would take to power that.

thats what they said about core duos! but it will be done eventually.

Mid to late 2009 is likely when the MBP moves to Nehalem. We might see a Penryn Quad Core in late 2008 as a BTO on the 17" for $3499.

As for MacBooks, I don't expect it to happen until Intel stops making dual-core CPUs.

oh gawd thats so pricy! when can they put it under the macbook budget

Not for a while. It's a consumer laptop, after all. For me, I don't need a quad core processor for using pages and safari, lol.

macbook will i think eventually be sporting Quad Core processors since apple innovates and they have an excellent partnership with Intel but it might take a very long time.. they are also concerned about their processors' power consumption

The first mobile Quad-Core CPU will run over $1000 based on Intel's pricing stratagems.

It is unlikely AMD will be able to offer a competitive model anytime soon, so Intel will be content to keep prices high to maximize the ASP (Average Selling Price).

If you're holding out for a quad core processor, it sounds like you'd really be better off with a MacBook Pro anyways. With a screaming processor, you don't really want to be held back graphics-wise by the low bandwidth between the RAM and logic board and the general cruminess of Intel GMA.

The nehalem quads will be released in 2009, but they won't be common enough or low priced enough to go in the macbooks for some time.

Since the cancellation of dual cores isn't even on intels roadmap, it might be a way that Apple distinguishes its Pros from it's consumer line, pros = quad, consumer = duo. Kinda like the old G3/G4 division.

It was rumored for a while that nehalem might be called core 3, so would a core 3 duo be enough?

I don't think we'll see Quad Cores in Apple's entry level laptops anytime soon. It will be years before Quad Core is run of the mill. With each new generation, Apple needs a reason for you to drop more money on the Pro models. (Another reason why you'll never see dedicated graphics in the MacBook.) With that said, we'll see them in the MacBook Pro long before the MacBooks.
