Assuming that there’ll be ARM based Macs in 2021. How long do you think it’ll be until the 2019 MBP 16” becomes “obsolete” and it’s not able to upgrade to the new MacOS?

One assumes same as the rest 7 years after Apple ceases to sell that model...

Vintage and obsolete products

Owners of iPhone, iPad, iPod, or Mac products may obtain service and parts from Apple or Apple service providers for 5 years after the product is no longer sold—or longer, where required by law. Apple has discontinued support for certain technologically obsolete products.

Vintage products are those that have not been sold for more than 5 and less than 7 years ago. Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Apple TV vintage products continue to receive hardware service from Apple service providers, including Apple Retail Stores, subject to availability of inventory, or as required by law.

Obsolete products are those whose sales were discontinued more than 7 years ago. Monster-branded Beats products are considered obsolete regardless of when they were purchased. Apple has discontinued all hardware service for obsolete products, with no exceptions. Service providers cannot order parts for obsolete products.

“Obsolete” in the case of an architecture switch is really going to depend upon your needs.

Depending on what you do with your Mac, you may need to get on their latest hardware much much sooner than others.

I have a family member that still uses a PowerBook G4 because her only need is a distraction free writing device with a keyboard she loves.

The PowerBook G4 has a very comfy keyboard. I have one that still runs (barely! One ram dimm slot died so it’s down to 512mb)

I totally agree.

I visited her last winter and played around with it again for the first time in a long time and it was just an absolute joy to type on. Also what incredible longevity… Hers is from I think the fall of 2003. Just amazing.

I can’t even imagine a butterfly keyboard computer 17 years on.
I would bet that they will all be in the dumpster, broken.

My 2017 keyboard has got a couple of half stuck keys now and I really haven’t done a ton of typing on it compared to my desktop. Time to bring it in for a swap 🤠
