So, any guesses on how long until they start manufacturing 27" sized retina display panels?

I don't think the technology is ready even for the 15" rMBP right now but they're already here.

I originally thought 3 years from now but now I'm not so sure.

What do you guys think?

With the current form factor of the upcoming iMac release coupled with the amount of GPU power needed to power 27" of Retina display... A long while.

27" already comes close to retina display. I don't notice much difference when I compare it to the retina notebooks. Besides, iMacs are very powerful. Keeping that up with higher resolution will take A LOT of improvements, and I won't even think of how videogames will run...

Retina for iMacs is less then iPads one would guess. As you face is not that close to the iMac screen. In saying that I think the iMac screens are plenty good enough now. (ie amazing).

And as said above it's probably a while before gpu tech catches up to be able to power a 21/5" or 27" retina screen in that form factor without too much heat.

Next year.
