I plan to buy an unlocked iPhone 2.5G (has everything that an iPod Touch ahs, but better, so why not?) and was wondering. Software Updates come, and then its unlocked (right?) and so on.

But how long will this last? Will jail broken iPhones become useless any time soon because no one manages to make an update for unlocked iPhones? I worry because if I buy an unlocked iPhone, I dont want iPod Touch and 3G iPhone Owners to get updates with more apps etc. while us 2.5G Owners are left behind.

Is there still a large user base of 2.5G owners so people will still put the effort (which I thank, by the way) to get it working on unlocked phones?

There are loads of people out there with their 1G iPhones. Pwnagetool essentially makes the unlock upgrade resistant, so I really don't think you have anything to worry about.
