I was bored and decided I want a PowerPC router running OpenBSD. 1U would be best for form factor and I only need 2 ethernet ports, so an Xserve should work. Thing is, I don't want a 1U vacuum cleaner (or howling jet engine, aka Sun Fire T2000) in the office.

How tolerable is one of these things sitting in the same room as you?

They’re jet engines.
Further, the power draw on them makes for a terrible choice for a router.

They are not as bad as my Sun Fire T1000 as you stated but it becomes irritating, I'll try to get a video of my Xserve G4 powered-up uploaded .

Even my PowerMac G5 which sits in my living room is fine but after 2 hours I feel that I (personally) am getting irritated
with the constant noise.

Camera held elbows length away from the servers middle part

00:00 Intel Xserve underneath which isn’t powered up noise
00:06 Xserve G4 booting
00:55 moving closer to the back where the fans are
00:57 phone next to the fans ( and the cable mess )

Couldn't upload the MOV file so here is a link to it (valid for 30 days)

These are not the type of computers that are meant to be in the same room as the user. They are very loud. They're not meant to be used in a consumer manner at all. They also only have PCI graphics, and not PCI express type PCI. We're talking the same type of PCI in G4 towers.

Great, thanks for the video. It's probably around the same as my Cisco 2811.

Yup , I know the sound of an 2811 , a bit louder during boot and maybe when under load, mine sit outside so they don't bother me.

Sitting next to it would be annoying and having to listen to it for more than 4 hours will become irritating and breaks your concentration. However if you already have a lot of humming devices surrounding it , it won't stand out.

I was wanting one for a small scale server, but now I feel an early Intel mini would be actually cheaper than the PPC way.

Still love PowerPC, but financial reality is setting in for a small scale server.
