I keep about 14GB free. I’m rockin the 64GB version

I feel like it’s enough space for me to take pics and shoot short videos which is all I need.

I feel like I should free up space to relieve storage anxiety but I just don’t need the space really

I have about 32GB left out of 64GB. I keep original size photos on my phone as well. A 128GB option would be the sweet spot for me personally.

I have a 128GB Sandisk that works perfectly on my 64 gig11Pro..
Had issues at first but they just released an update to their app and fixed all issues. For $40 it’s a good option to have available. Just backed up my wife’s XR and my iPad Pro and still have 75 GB free.

why specifically 20%? Like what would happen if it was less
When working with nand flash it’s optimal to not fill up since nand works best if there certain amount of free storage due to trim and garbage collection, however I’m not sure if this applies to iPhones since Apple never release any info on how their nand process trim commands

64Gb 11 Pro, 14.3Gb used, I don’t use many apps, no games and music is streamed, so plenty room for pics etc if/when I take them.

Adam.

Any chance you could post a link of the sandisk storage you use?

64GB IP11. 41 GB free. This is after aggressive shunting of APPs. Photo lib is in icloud and optimized on phone.
As an experiment, I moved my music lib to the AW. Works well but the downside is one cant use the EQ and thats a big one.

I want to see how much lower in usage i can go but the main problem and cause of anxiety is the mysterious "Other" system storage. It can grow to obscene sizes.

256GB, 131GB available... My previous phone was X, also 256GB and since getting it I accumulated 69GB of photos and videos, so I should not run out of space for the next two years, unless I switch to 4K60. Also, I was using JPEG/H.264 until September this year, and now I use HEIF/HEVC, so that should help too.

For those who have the 256GB and lots of photos/videos, something to consider for next iPhone: get the 64GB and use the $150 difference to get iCloud space ($2.99 for 200GB will last for 4+ years with the price difference), which will still allow all of your photos/videos to be on your phone (optimized) with the added benefit of having access to all your photos/videos on all your Apple devices while not being at risk of losing your entire photo/video collection if you lose your phone

This is what I’ve been doing. Have had 50GB iCloud space last 2-3 years. Until recently upgraded to 200GB. Now if apple goes back to 128GB that would be the one for me.

I use iCloud to sync my photos between my iPhone, iPad and Mac. However, I also like to keep local copies, so I could access my photo library anytime regardless of the connection.

I guess you’d have to decide whether it’s worth the extra cash for device storage. I keep all my masters on my iMac and the rest access via iCloud and have never been limited by lack of connection when I wanted to look at a photo.

doesn't work when on 8 hour plane ride or subway rides. if someone lives in rural with poor reception they even more screwed.

If you are frequently looking at photos from years ago and a bit of extra savings is not as important, then your choice of course. For me (I regularly do 8h+ flights and live in the mountains), I just haven’t been in a situation when I wanted to look at a photo when I didn’t have connectivity

When I didn’t have kids I took most photos with my DSLR and kept my library on my Mac and put select photos in albums on Google Photos.

Now I mostly use my iPhone and keep all the pictures locally and in the cloud.

I have about 499GB free out of 512...

There is no way you have 499GB free out of 512GB as the installed OS and other preinstalled software takes up more space then that.

I have a 512GB 11 Pro Max and I have 324GB left. I never got close to the maximum on my previous Xs Max 512GB and I doubt I’ll get close to it on this one but I don’t like relying on the Cloud and prefer to have everything stored locally on the phone.
