How many hours will it take to copy a 100GB folder
on USB 2.0 external hard drive to my MacBook Air?
(MBA has 256GB SSD with 170GB available)

The 100GB folder contains mostly music, video,
and photos.

Thanks!

depends on number of files, file sizes, speed of SSD, Speed of the through put you get on the USB port, speed of the drive you are writing to.....

I have a few of the USB 2 WD MyPassport bus powered drives, also a bunch of older externally powered USB 2 drives. I have clocked them with read speeds of about 35MB/s.

So do the math… it works out of 2.1GB/minute. It may take longer for a Finder copy due to overhead. Definitely should not take all night though. ;)

thanks!

Turns out that it took less than an hour for the whole 100GB to be copied.
(57 minutes to be exact)
