Hi,

I am new to mac. I love the doc at the bottom of the screen on my macbook pro. I was wondering, how many apps can I have in the doc? How many is too many?

Sorry, if this question seem elementary, I don't want to do anything to my computer that would cause it to not work effectively.

Thanks

To the best of my knowledge, the number of app icons on the dock will not effect the functioning of your computer.:)

I don't know how many is too many but since you are new to the Mac the following might be helpful. I have a few applications that I use frequently and I keep those on the task bar. When I want to use an application that is not on the task bar I use Spotlight to find and open it. You can get to Spotlight via the magnifying glass icon at the top right of the screen or via holding down the Command key and pressing the spacebar. Spotlight is also a very fast way to find and open documents by searching for words in their title or contents.

When you install a new app you don't have to keep it in your doc. Just keep the ones you use regularly there. For the others use the launch pad (rocket icon) to find the ones you want. You can drag and drop them into groups like on your iOS device and give the group a name like photo apps.
You can also use finder or spotlight to find your apps.
Enjoy your new Mac and don't worry to much about making it work defectively. OSx is pretty robust.

The answer to your question depends on your eyesight. The more icons you place in the Dock, the smaller they will become. Now, I'm not saying that the size decreases every time you add a single icon to the Dock, but when it hits a threshold, they all get smaller. I put some in the Dock, and others I have as aliases on the Desktop.

It's probably something that will come naturally the more you use your Mac: keep the programs you use most frequently, or need quick access to, at the bottom!

You can narrow them down once you start using your Mac more. I currently have 7-8 icons in my dock, all the apps I use the most. For anything it, I have LaunchPad organized with my most-used apps first. LaunchPad should always be just a 4-finger pinch away!

Ok, Thank you all for the posts. I think I have a much better idea
now of how to organize my desk top and the icons in my dock.

I like the dock feature on the Mac, I currently have 30 icons in my
dock and as was mentioned they are getting pretty small. I will
use the launch pad and the desk top to organize them to make this
a little more readable.

Thanks again for you help.
