All my songs are either bought from iTunes or ripped from CDs they are all at 256 sound quality. Also, my iPod is 32 GB—I plan to use it mainly for music.
 
It depends on the length of the songs. Figure 8 MB as the average 256 AAC file size. Assume you have 28 GB of space due to the iOS files and apps. 28GB/8MB is 3500 songs. The actual number will be different though.

Look at your iTunes music directory on your computer and see how many songs you have and how much room they are taking. From that you can get a rough idea how many songs of your music type you could fit. You can look in your Touch settings to see how much room you actually have available for music.

My iTunes is empty at the moment, I deleted everything! I'm planning to just re-download and re-rip only the songs I really, really like.
