Well bummer, I can only really hear one on the top rightish area of my keyboard

You can check System Preferences > Sound > Output > Balance
You might also try different sound/music files, as some are recorded mono to only one channel.
If that doesn't help, it might be a loose wire or a blown speaker.

when I do that, I am able to hear load and clear when at far left and far right...

But still sounds as if coming from top right in each case
