I am using a Logitech Performance MX with Mavericks on a rMBP. I am also using Karabiner (i.e. KeyRemapForMacBook) but don't have any pointer settings set with it. Things were fine but I did a clean reinstall of Mavericks and now the forward and back buttons on my mouse will only switch between spaces. This did not happen (same machine, same OS) before the reinstall. Going forward and back in a browser has a whole lot more utility than switching spaces does for me.

It really makes sense that button action should be mapped preferentially to functionality that is of use in the application that has focus. That said, I don't care about losing the space switching behavior altogether. I just want to use the buttons for forward / backward in the browser. It appears to me that the ideas of "forward" and "back" map only to switching spaces.

How do I make this better, please?
