I'm a big NBA fan and until the 8th of January, NBA League Pass mobile is free and you can watch any live NBA game on your iPhone and I've been watching it at work and it's been really, really awesome and I'm contemplating buying the whole season for $40, but I don't have WiFi at work.

I'm on an unlimited data plan but with AT&T throttling any unlimited data users who use more than 2GB I'm wondering how much data this app would take up if I'm watching say a game a night (I don't really have a team and just watch the last few minutes of every close game which probably amounts to a whole game of data) because if it sets me over my data limit and I get throttled and the quality is terrible (it's good on 3G, not great, but viewable) it's probably not worth dropping the $40 to buy the whole season.

Anyone have any idea?

Thanks!

I watched a 2:28 youtube video yesterday.

My data use doubled...from 25-30MB a day.. to 62MB yesterday.

I seriously don't think it's 2 GBs and you get throttled. I'd guess more in the 8-10+ GBs area. For one, their highest plan (w/ tethering) is 4 GBs and it's not even called unlimited. If AT&T is throttling at 2 GBs, they are doing it wrong. You may try calling them (twice to get 2 different reps) and ask them.

BTW, the 40 is totally worth it. The blackout part is the hardest to accept.

If it streams 720p to you, then a game should be between 500 megs and 1 GB, so yes you are going to go over AT&T's video cap. I might be wrong about the 500 megs, especially if it isn't 720P level of detail being streamed, but I think that is about right. If I'm wrong, it still can't be less than 100 megs, so you are going to go well over 2GB a month if you are watching 5 games a week.
This is really a service for when you have access to wifi, expecting to stream over 3G this amount of video is really pushing it.

Dude stop

so are you saying that any nba game is free on mobile until jan 8 2012?

Are you serious?????

I was happy to see it's free until the 8th until I realized it's ruined by those criminals at AT$T.

Now that I actually see what the NBA app is all about with the free pass, thank GOD I didn't subscribe. Black out on damn near every game I wanted to watch.

I caught the Boston game the other night. Saw Them get creamed over 3G. They really need Pierce.

I use 3G all the time on purpose. Even when I'm at home. Only grab wifi when I have bad signal. I have unlimited data, and I'm gonna squeeze as much as I can in a month.

Never seen any of this throttling business.

I have NHL Gamecenter, which I assume is the NHL's equivalent to League Pass.

I watch at least one game per night using 3g, and I consistently rack up 12-15 GB of data per month. Just got throttled this month for the first time.

Once you get throttled, you wont be able to stream a thing.

I got the text that they would throttle me on my next billing cycle if I didn't reduce my data. I was only at 2.1 GB. Do a search. There's a massive thread on this.

I was throttled after only 3.7 GBs of use this month. I basically went from 6.2 Mbps down to 0.1 Mbps down on average. It friggin blows. I guess that's what I get for using iTunes Match and Netflix over 3G. The only streaming I can use now is audio. Video just lags and lags and LAGS.
