i've heard apple stores can give you a discount if you're splurging. I'll be buying a ~$3500 system in a month or 2, once the latest revisions are out. can i shave a few hundred? could i pull it off on top of the edu discount too?

Get to know a employee. That's the only way. They might offer you a free (or discounted) .Mac. If you have a current student ID, you will get the student discount- don't expect to get both a student %10, and another %10 off (friend discount)- it's one or the other. In the last 6 months, I bought a MacPro, MBP, MB, and two Mini's. I got the friend (%10) discount on all of those, plus a free .Mac- nothing else (except the satisfaction of owning some kick-ass hardware ).
