I was just exporting a video from FCPx and noticed that on my 8 core CPU's were at about 300% usage. Ram was at 1.2gb usage of 24, so the machine was spare of resources.

I did some reading and learned how FCPx now uses more of the gfx card when rendering while my experience in the past with FCP7 and prior relied just on CPU. I don't if Adobe has taken a similar tact - I've never looked into it to be honest.

so I'm wondering - how much does GFX card apply these days to render times, in FCPx and/or After Effects?

I'm running a ATI Radeon 5570 and its memory usage is at 100% it seems always. Is it the hold up in my render times? If not, any ideas why was the machine only running at about 35% to render?
