Open up a dell PC and tell me how many chips dell makes.... probably 1, the BIOS.

As for the gross profit on the devices, the net is probably lower, but it's still is one of Apple's biggest money makers. They probably make more off the iPod than the sale of educational Mac mini's or iBooks. This is why I think the halo effect is not a big deal for jobs ( not that he doesn't like it ) he has no reason to "PUSH" the iPod community to Mac computers because he woudn't want to upset the cash cow that is the iPod community. If they move to mac's anyways it's a benifit.
