I have a 3,1 mode with a 2.4ghz core 2 duo and 8600GT. It's starting to get a little long in the tooth - are the new ones significantly faster (CPU and Graphics wise)? I'm debating whether to take the plunge and get a new one now, or perhaps waiting for the next refresh.

The 3,1 is actually the Mid/Late 2007 model. The Early 2008 model is the 4,1.

Well yes the i7 with hyperthreading and turbo boost makes it much more powerful CPU wise, and the 330m is also quite a bit better than the 8600 (The difference isn't as significant as the i7 v C2D.) With that being said, if your computer isn't all that slow then you should wait because obviously the would keep getting more powerful. Simply don't buy until you know you absolutely need it because obviously you would miss the next update.

What size do you use?
I find the 320m graphics much better than 9400m, and your GPU is even older so the GPU is a massive jump
