I plan to buy the new M1 macbook air but heard that it is only useful after spending a lot of money for apps. Is that true and how much did you spend?

Apple includes Pages (a text processor), Numbers (spread sheet), Keynote (presentation), GarageBand (music creation software), iMovie (video editor), Photos (photo editor and management) as well as a bunch of others programs for free. Additionally there are a lot of high quality freeware and shareware programs. What do you need?

Doesn't that rather depend on what you want to do?

If you only want to use any of these:

* email
* web surfing
* word processor
* edit text
* spreadsheets
* presentations
* photographs
* pdf files
* music production
* command line through a terminal
* calendar
* task list / reminders
* notes
* video calls
* maps
* music from your own CDs etc
* address book
* chess
* a complete programming environment for Mac and iOS apps (additional free download)
* dictionary
* and a few other things

then you won't need to spend an extra penny, as all these are provided free when you buy the Mac.

Of course, you can buy alternatives for all of these, and some of the alternatives will have more features than the built-in ones — for example if you want to do professional music production then Garage Band probably want be enough — and Apple doesn't provide a program to do everything, but that depends on exactly what you want to do.
