How much of a roundabout is needed for streaming from Windows?

I'm interested in picking up an Apple TV this time around. The use cases would be to stream from the various iPhones and iPads laying around in my home, and maybe playing some games that I had bought for my iPhone in the past...

However, the current biggest sticking point is the ability to stream (cast?) from my Windows laptop, which is home to my curated media collection. I've noticed there are apps that I can purchase for Windows to stream to an Apple TV. How stable or janky is this at the moment? I don't limit myself to only iTunes when it comes to buying or renting movies.

I use Infuse and SMB, DLNA also works though. SMB on windows server you can enable compression which is super helpful.
