I currently have a 2018 13" MacBook Pro with an i7, 1TB drive, and 16GB of RAM. We are looking at replacing it (handing it down actually) and are deciding between a 13" MacBook Air and 14" MacBook Pro. My question is, how much of an upgrade would an M2 Air with 16GB of RAM be over our current machine?

Massive upgrade. The M2 chip will blow any pre 2020 laptop away. I moved from a 2019 MBP 15 i7 (I think) to a MBA 13 M1 chip with 16gb ram and it was night and day. Super fast. You will be very pleased. You get a 14 day "trial" anyway if you buy from apple so its a no brainer.

It will be a significant upgrade. Moving from Intel to Apple Silicone will feel like night and day.

Many bring up "e-waste" but what your handing it down is what a lot of people do.

Any M1 or M2 Mac will be a breath of fresh air.

Be aware that there's a MBA 15" that starts at $1299. If you prefer the weight and size of your 2018 then take time to compare to which M1 or M2 13", 14" or 15" you'd likely carry.
