How much RAM can my MBP take? Advice wanted

My girlfriend has a Late 2008 Aluminium 13 inch Macbook which currently has 4 GB of RAM (see attachment).

She wants to increase the RAM but I am a little confused as to what the max is I can go to. According to Apple, the max is 4GB, which she currently has installed, but according to various other sites including the one from the attachment below, it can take "reportedly 8GB" and definitely 6GB. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of what the max really is?
