my friend ask me to find him a laptop, price range of a base 16inch, with 32gb 512gb 5300m.

however im covering all basis so im also looking into used 15inch folks in the sales thread are offering.

for the same price as 16inch, im looking at
2018 to 2019
15inch with 32gb ram,
1tb
8 cores,
vega 16 to 20.
3 years applecare plus

thats the going rate based on swappa and here and ebay.

i have a 2018 15inch myself, honestly its not that bad, keyboard is meh but livable, grown to deal with the touchbar and what not, only thing i do not like is how easy to over heat.

The 16 hopefully has a working keyboard. I would suggest "do not buy the butterfly keyboard under any circumstance".

Yes, apple will replace it if it breaks. They will not however compensate you for lost time, which if you are using the machine for work (which, being a "pro" machine is not unreasonable") - could out-weigh the cost of an entire replacement machine if you lose a couple of days of productivity, depending on your charge out rate. Its not worth the risk if you think you can avoid it. Irrespective of warranty.

If you aren't using it to generate money then it's up to you what your tolerance for annoyance is. I'd still get a 16. Given the choice between the two.

He is using it for his new shop he just opened so this is a business expense. I agree with you that should not buy the butterfly under any circumstances, just checking if that circumscribed also covers much more spec for the same price :D

If that's the case... yeah i'd definitely try the 16.

We know the older machines have well documented issues (sure, not all of them, but there's a definite trend there, and this is about risk minimisation). The 16.... hopefully not so much. It's a roll of the dice at this point, but hopefully Apple have sorted it. If they have not, after all the problems with the butterfly gear since 2015... well i don't know what to say about that.

But scissor switches have been on portables for 20-30 years now and are proven tech, so i'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully they haven't screwed it up somehow.
