hey guys just wondering out of the box how much space is left on your ssds. i ordered 512. 499 is the capacity according to disk utility and only 474 is available. i have installed nothing...

Lion and all the apps. It's pretty obvious really. If it was 512gb exactly you would have nothing but a grey screen lol.

Apple must be using non-standard reporting as well (although erroring in the favor of the consumer). You expect about a 7% drop from the advertised decimal (GB) to the reported binary (GiB) storage. I would have expected around 475GiB of storage on an advertised 512GB HDD or SSD.

After that you expect the free space to drop lower because you are storing your OS in it.

well you guys are full of obvious info...i know lion takes up space and i also wasn't expecting 512 available. my concern was that 25 gigs was already used...that is more then system files take up. come to find out its 16 gigs worth of sleep images...

Yep, the sleep image is the same size as your ram.

Apple switched to the decimal notation a few years ago, I believe, so looking at a 500GB drive in OS X will show you 500GB, not 470ish as you would get if they were still using GiB.

well just for people who are interested following the tuaw.com to turning safe sleep off and clearing the image worked great...saved me 16gigs

Not sure I would ever want to turn Safe Sleep off  not even for 16 gigs.
