Just got my new Iphone 4 and I was looking at the storage space in itunes. I realized it says I have 2.1 GBs of apps. I have about 12 downloaded apps, none of them anything special, plus the stock apps. Does everyone else's phone have that much storage taken up by their apps?

Are the stock apps what bring the 16 GB down to 14 GB? Or are they counted under the green apps section of the bar that's in iTunes to show how much storage you have?

If it's counted in the green section, how many gigs are the stock apps?

No, formatting is what brings it down to 14GB. It's no different than when you buy a 1TB HD and get +/-910GB of usable storage. It's a combo marketing smoke and mirrors and math. The stock apps probably take up less than 20MB combined. They are pretty basic.

Apps come in all shapes and sizes. The avg app is under 20MB. Some games are 50MB, NAVs are 100-200MB. It would be genuinely difficult to fill up a 16GB iPhone with only apps. You are talking 500-700 apps.

Thanks for the reply.

That's strange then. Why is it saying I have 2 gigs worth of apps? Like I said, I have about 12 apps with only 3 being games. At this rate, I would fill up my 10 remaining gigs with 60 more apps. Why would it be saying they're occupying so much storage?

Go into iTunes, go to Apps and right-click on each app, then click Get Info.

It will tell you how large each app is.

And not all apps are the same, so you won't necessarily fill your phone up that quickly.

Ok, I added up all the apps I have and I should only have 132 MB worth of apps. Why does it say I have 2 gigs?

Are you sure that your not looking at "Other" under the capacity by chance and thinking that's made up of apps? Because otherwise if you only have 132 MB of apps and it says 2 GIG's there is something wrong.

By chance did you restore your iPhone from backup?

Yes, it definitely says apps 2.1 gigs. I did restore from a back up and I was thinking this could have something to do with it. I had one of those 3rd party video apps for my old 3G that had a ton of videos, could those still be occupying space somehow?

I really don't want to do a full restore and lose all my app info, so would there be a way to just delete the files I want from the back up?

No, Unfortunately with the backup/restore it's all or nothing. I would recommend doing a restore and setting it up as new and then syncing the apps back to it.

I had the same thing happen except it was the "Other" Category that was taking up alot of space. When i restored and set it up as new the space was back to normal.

Ok, if I did the restore, exactly what things would I lose, and what things would stay.

If you did the restore you would lose everything and it would reimage the iPhone back to like brand new. But you can always re-sync everything back to it.

Ok, so I can sync back my music, movies, photos, etc...

What about contacts, sms, and apps. Will my Angry Birds game save survive?

You want make sure you transfer your purchases from your iPhone to itunes this way any apps you purchased on the iPhone will be in itunes. Your contacts and SMS's will be gone because the contacts are not saved to the sim.

But if you have them saved in your address book on OSX or yahoo or google you can sync them back over
