Could anyone share their experience of how much prices of previous models had deceased previously when a newer model line came out? My parent's iPhone device was stolen. We're trying to decide whether it would be better to wait for iPhone 12 release in October (or later) to buy a phone or to just buy one now. Regardless of 12 release, parent will be buying whatever is within budget.

TD;LR When iPhone 12 comes out, about how much will the prices of previous models (iPhone 11, 11 Pro, XR) decrease?

The XR and 11 PRO will drop off the face of the earth! 😂 haha

(current rumor is that XR and 11pro will stop being sold by Apple in the Fall).

Last year’s models tend to only be found new at a carrier. You can basically buy them “new” on Apple’s Refurb site though. Currently, the iPhone XR is going for ~$100 off. The iPhone XS and XS Max are going for $200-$250 off.

Carriers can sometimes mark them down heavily too once the new model drops. Example, T-Mobile offered the 256GB iPhone XS for $699 and 512GB for $849 before selling out. I expect the same type of carrier/refurb discounts on the 11, Pro and Pro Max about 2-4 months after the 12 series releases.

If Apple were to retain 11 Pro, that would be a huge Detractor away from the iPhone 12. The problem is, is even discounted, consumers will flock to the cheaper version, essentially because there’s not major differential probably between both models or they don’t care to know what Apple highlighting the separating factors.

But even so, it’s not like you won’t be able to find the 11 Pro, carriers will have it slashed, Apple will liquidate whatever stock they have and it will be around for a minimum of a year discounted, even if it’s not direct through Apple.

Thank you everyone!

I see... so if iPhone 11/Pro prices decrease after the new line-up releases, it'll be from third-party retailers (like Best Buy?) rather than from Apple itself. That makes a lot of sense. Thank you again for your insight everyone! :)

After holiday season you’ll find the lowest price.
