So I got my wife an iPhone 13 mini - great phone all around. She's a pre-school teacher, just fyi.

She was prepping laundry for the kids and I guess her phone fell into the pile of clothes. An assistant grabbed the pile of laundry and started a wash.

The phone spent a good 20 minutes on a full wash cycle before my wife realized the error.

The phone was retrieved - a warning from the phone said the phone was wet and not to use any ports.

So after a night of drying out it looked ok. I tried plugging it in but the port was blocked by chunks of sand.
I cleaned this out and was finally able to charge and sync the phone. All is well.

Not a scratch on the phone, but phew.... dodged a bullet on this one, the phone is about a week old.

Now's the time to either purchase a lottery ticket or keep your fingers crossed? Or both?

If you don’t already have Apple care on it, I’d purchase that before the window closes. I know that the phones are waterproof/resistant but who knows what the 20 minutes in the agitated water did to the insides. You may end up with corrosion that impacts the phone months from now.

I am nervous about the washing prowess of that machine.

I can't be sure on this today, but didn't Apple use to say that water damage would void the warranty, despite the water resistance they tout?

Or are we thinking that since after buying AppleCare+ we can always pay a fee and get the device replaced (without question?) we are good to go?

Yep, we bought AppleCare with the phone. I neglected to mention we kept it in a baggie with desiccant overnight.

I think Apple charges a fee ($150?) not sure.... but even though it's good for a few meters for 30 minutes there's still an apparent risk. We need washing machine tested iPhones :p

As said before, return it for whatever reason if it is less than 14 days. Although, my wife's 11 pro was about 30 days old and fell out of her pocket at a back yard bon fire. There was pouring rain all night. Inches of rain. She found it in the yard the next day. That was two years ago and it still works fine.

Should be fine. I placed my brand new 11pm in a bucket of water, while it played a YouTube video… for 15 seconds ??. Freaked my kids out, but it was fine. Sent it back to apple to upgrade to 12PM, with no issues!

If you don’t have AppleCare plus I would pick it up to play it safe.

I did that with an iPhone 5c years ago. Dead. Nothing would bring it back. I’m glad you were able to save it. I will say that even the all glass phones seem to be tougher than the old ones. I watch a YouTube video where the host dropped new glass iPhones from various heights and they sustained no damage. Pretty amazing really.

It can be submerged in water up to 6 meters for 30 minutes. Should be good. no worries.
There’s one heck of a difference between ‘submerged in water for 30 minutes” and sitting in a spinning washing machine with dirt and soap suds being pushed through the device at force.

@macguru212 please bear in mind that water damaged can sometimes take months to manifest itself.

If I were you I’d get it replaced now rather than have it fail at the worst possible time. It may seem to be fine today, but water corrosion is a deadly slow killer of electronics.

You may be lucky, but the chances are higher, you won’t be.
