hello,

hi i just recently got an external hd for my mbp to use for time machine.
how often do should i back up to time machine? i know im gonna be out most times and wondering when would be a good time to do so?

thanks

I leave my external HD connected and running all the time, so Time Machine does incremental backups every hour. I didn't do any configuration, it does this by default. The hourly backups run very quickly and I don't find them to be a distraction.

It all depends on your schedule since you have to physically plug in the external. Just back up as often as you can. Daily, weekly...

Also, another solution would be to connect the external to your Mac Pro and just share the external thru your home network. However, if your Mac Pro is sleeping the drive cannot be accessed by other computers.

can you show me how to share the drive using the mac pro? i think id like to do that.

HD connected all the time with my laptop. So i guess every hour.

It's always good to have a backup!!:)

I set up an external drive a while back, but if I remember correctly...

1) Connect the drive to your Mac Pro
2) System Preferences > Sharing > check File Sharing
3) Click the + button under Shared Folders and choose your External Drive
4) On your MBP, open a Finder window and your Mac Pro should appear in the Sidebar under Shared, click and connect to the external drive
5) Once the external is mounted on your desktop, it will be available in Time Machine

It does not harm to just leave the external TM drive plugged in as much as possible. Only the changes are written to the drive so if there are no changes not much is written.

How often to back up? back up what you can't afford to loose.

Also do not depend on TM as your only backup. You need at least three copies of the data kept in at least two geographical locations
