how often does Apple have 14 week quarters?

I would like to put this out hoping someone has more insight into this rare occurence. I just checked and the december 2012 quarter started on a saturday and ended on a saturday. So Apple included that first week into the quarter even though only one day out of the week fell into the september 2011!

I heard some people mention that a 14 week quarter has occurred before but I just wanted to understand what circumstances led to this decision?
