Good morning,

I just got an ibook g4 1.2ghz/512 ram its running os x 10.5.8 and im wondering how often i should run onyx on this system? I have a g4 tibook first gen running tiger and i would run onyx on it about once a month if i remembered to and it ran nice. only reason i changed laptops is i couldnt find a decent battery for the tibook that worked right for decent price, still use it as my desktop.

Most of the things Onyx does will be run automatically by the Mac OS
These are regular maintenance scripts that run daily, weekly and monthly

Onyx gives you the flexibility to run them manually, but it is no needed for the most part

Although Onyx does have a few other capabilities that can be useful, such as easily toggling hidden files and such

I never use Onyx now! I used to run the daily, weekly and monthly scripts until I noticed the Onyx was reporting that they had the OS had already run them automatically!

I've also found that the so-called "cleaning" tasks in Onyx can do more harm than good!!

"Run OnyX" is a rather ambiguous expression, since (as i recall) OnyX is capable of doing something like 57 different tasks. It might be better to specify which functions you would be wanting to run. Anyway, as far as frequency goes, there is no rule... so, how about 'only when necessary'? [or —as in my case — never.]

If you're using it on a daily basis and keep the computer running over night once or twice a week, you only need to do it once a month, if you gather a lot of temporary files through surfing, downloading or moving tons of data.

For the most part, Onyx is unnecessary.

this is good to know, since i had a compaq laptop for 10 days before i traded it for this ibook, i had to run disk cleanup twice and defrag the hard drive 2 times in 10 days. windows 7 is alot better than the previous versions of windows but os x is by far much better. the g4 ibook 1.2/512 seems just as fast as the compaq was and it had a 2.3 single core amd and 2 gb ram. im very happy that i found my new ibook! much better to be back using os x even though it isnt snow leopard.
