from what i've heard. however someone else may respond here with better info. you need to have retail experience, sales experience, and probably a good background in apple products as helpful. which means they'll probably be looking for 18 or older, with very few 18 year olds being hired.

that's what i expected, I don't understand why they don't say you must be 18 or older on the apple jobs site? It says are you 18 or older, then gives you yes or no. Oh well, back to restaurant work.

If you really want to work in an Apple store, then you should get some retail experience. Maybe a radio shack, or a best buy would hire you, even if Apple won't. That plus plenty of Mac knowledge is probably the best way to get the job.

They hired me at 18 but it took a lot of persistence, two interviews, etc... and I was also the youngest person there.

Trying at 17 sounds fairly impossible, unless you're really qualified. Otherwise just wait a year and they'll be more likely to take you.

VERY hard job to get. They like to brag and say it's like getting into Stanford University. You have to fit their "image" more than anything else. They hired people at our store that knew next to nothing about Macs... but fun personality? Looks like a Mac user? You're hired.

Yeah, it's Apple and it's fun working there, but keep in mind it's just glorified retail. Don't limit your prospects!

You could probably expect $8-9/hr starting pay. Nice bonuses, discounts, but that's about it.

did you have prior retail experience?

Thats what I hate about my local apple store... the people there know SH*T about macs. I know more about them then the sales people do. I have overheard many conversations in an Apple Store where the salesperson goes "Im not sure" or "I dont know, let me check", then I just answer the question to the customer, lol.

Its doesn't matter how much you know about a mac, its how well you sell em....

Old enough to understand you wouldn't want to work there.

haha, sounds true. thanks for the replies. I think I would rather stick in the restaurant biz for now. It is so hard to find a job right now in michigan (we have the worst economy in the country). I used to be able to go to 3 places and I would at least get a job at one of them. Now i have applied to 20 places and no jobs are ever avail. oh yeah, and that apple store is like 35 min. away and I would have to pay a lot for gas. I really dislike my location right now, but I wont keep btchn.

Probably they have issues with issurance as well. In order to bond the employee they need to be at least 18. This means if you steal stuff or go postal at the store the company is insured from lawsuits.

Another reason is that in Michigan you are on a restricted drivers' license until 18. Is that still correct?

I live in Michigan as well. I don't know about the Troy location but the people at the Novi location are not very knowledgable.

you are correct. I don't think I would even get the job if I was 18. sounds like you need green hair and a pierced lip. Jk

Yeah, they like retail experience a lot. My only experience was at a smoothy place, but it was enough. :)

They should be opening up a new one in Grand Rapids (Woodland Mall) but that has to be more then an Hour from where you live. I didnt relize that there were some0 people from Michigan on here... will anyone be going to the Grand Opening to the one at Woodland? I know i will be but i live about 10 mins away.

I started working for an independent Apple Store at 16, I'm still at it. The main Apple Flagship stores are going to look for people over 18, and preferably 2 years plus of retail experience, however I have visited some of the stores and its obvious that some of the employees don't know their stuff. It can vary from store to store.

Do the employies get commision on what they sell. Everytime I go in for something simple they always try to push in spending more money. And when i was in their with my mom joking that i want a PM with a 30" monitor the guy was quick to hand over his card.

no they don't get commision. I was so close to getting a job at an apple tech repair center in dexter, MI (actually it is only 2 miles from my house) but they lost a contract with some big school and couldn't hire me last minute.
