How: Output audio to 2 different ports simultaneously?

Hope I am just missing something really simple.

I want to have simultaneous output from the USB port and Digital Optical to go to 2 different DACs but the new 'Aggregate Device' won't out put to both.

been reading about combining inputs but combining outputs or sending iTunes to 2 different ports is not clear to me, I even tried, heard soundflower was needed......

I tried 2 variations in the aggregate editor:
1) Built in AUDIO + USB DAC
2) Sound Flower (2ch) + USB DAC
and chose these aggregates as the Default Output in the Audio MIDI Setup but...

I only get output to either Optical or USB, but not both simultaneously. What am I missing?

And what is Soundflower outputing exactly? how is it different than Built in Audio?

I also just installed Apple AU Lab and don't get that either.
