How practical is the Scottevest?

I got a $150 gift card burning a hole in my pocket:)

I have pretty much narrowed it down to either a Tom Bhin Ristretto or a Scottevest. I can't really see myself carrying the Ristretto on a day to day basis but could use it for travel or maybe taking the iPad with me and leaving the bag in the car.

So now I'm thinking about a Scottevest since they are about the same price as the Ristretto. I'm wondering how practical is it really to carry the weight on an ipad in the coat pocket? I know they advertise a weight management system, but I wonder would it really work?

I'm in Northern CA so I'd need a relatively light jacket so i can wear it all the time.

If you have owned a Scottevest, what are your thoughts?

What are the pros and cons of the bag vs the jacket?

I have a Scotivest and love it for travelling...but for the iPad, no way.
Far too heavy.
 
Here's the clincher: Woz is on the board of ScotteVest!

I have one of their windbreakers. Ideal for breaking wind.

Seriously: it's a very nice jacket, and lots and lots of pockets. Friends who have other models love 'em too. A friend is about to embark on a two month tour of eastern Europe with a vest model that has a pocket for his iPad.

Recommended.
 
Coincidentally, I was considering putting my SoctteVest travel vest in the market place. I just got my 3G yesterday and it is kind of annoying carrying it in my vest along with my backpack which I'm never without. Stairs are annoying unless you unzip it all the way, same goes for sitting, which isn't really my style so it annoys me. If you use the apple case, forget about it, it takes quite a bit of effort to fit it in with the case on.

Besides that, it's a really nice vest! I really want it to work, but I don't think it's a good fit for iPad (yet?). I'll give it another day or 2 to decide.

Sitting is kind of awkward IMO. Standing is fine. Overall, I wouldn't recommend for everyday use :/

Even though it doesn't really matter, I have the Apple case on in these.

It looks OK.

The main thing is to not have to carry it around. When you arrive somewhere you can take it out.

Only other real options are a murse or carrying it like a notepad.

Which scottevest is that in the photos?
 
This gave me an idea......I grabbed my Domke photographer's vest and found that the iPad with Belkin grip vue fits very nicely in one of the inner pockets. Cool! Haven't tried it with my Apple iPad case on the iPad yet, but I think it would work as well. Photographers' vests are cotton, but are sturdily constructed for the photographer to be able to stash lenses, filters, memory cards, batteries, Kleenex, sunglasses, hand warmers (in winter or on cold spring or fall mornings), etc.......

I probably wouldn't carry my iPad in my Domke vest pocket but it is an option.....
 
Is there any other manufacturer that sells a similar product to Scottevest?

Been seeing some poor quality and customer service reviews on Amazon.
 
I started researching travel vests and came across this thread. There seems to be two vests that will carry an iPad in the Scottevest and the 5.11 Tactical vest. Then it occurred to me I may already have a vest that would carry the iPad and lo and behold it does! It has four separate pockets two inside and two outside, all zippered that will hold an iPad with the Apple case on it. Unfortunately for others I can't find this vest in the United States. It is a Pro Yomax by Y Yomax Sportswear manufactured by the Balini Company. I bought it in Lima (Mira Flores) Peru five years ago on my way to Machu Picchu. I'm a happy camper now.
