I have:
13" MBP late 2009 model = very quiet
HP dv7t late 2008 model = super loud in comparison with it's fans running ALL the time, very annoying.

Also, I am considering a new MacBook Pro and I like quiet computers. So, are the 13" 15" 17" models all pretty quiet? Are there certain models or components to stay away from if I want a quiet notebook?

Chime in and give us your experiences with the loudness/quietness of notebooks you own or have used.

Thanks! :)

Unless I'm trying to sleep and the entire house is quiet as a crypt (until the crypt-keeper starts rambling on with his puns and anecdotes) the fans are unnoticeable.

I sometimes have to place my ear to the vent to hear anything at all.

As for every notebook I've ever seen from any other manufacturer, woah boy.

My neighbor has had three laptops. A Dell, a Compaq and a Gateway. Each of them sounds and feels like a damn hair dryer! I used to cringe when I had to fix it and would rest my hand next to the vent, not learning my lesson from before. Man, it really starts to burn before you realize it's burning. XD

Every Apple portable I've ever come across [I repair, perhaps, one per day] is whisper quiet.

My 13" MBP is so quiet I wouldn't know it was even on based by sound alone. Maybe its because my HP and Dell laptops sound like wind tunnels. No comparison!

I haven't had a laptop that was louder than a whisper since my Dell Latitude CPi, from 1999... Dell, Samsung, and Apple all included.

Really, any mid to high end laptop you get these days (or netbook!) will be quite quiet, it's not just an Apple thing.

silent. Only when time machine turns on to back do I hear any noise. Of course, if I have iTunes running that's a different story.

Stop making sense! Logical thinking doesn't belong here ;)

Have a 17" HP laptop and a 15" Compaq

they overheat and are loud...really loud

the apple is a sleeper unless I'm watching flash videos or encoding

i wasnt sure if i even tured it on, i hear nothing at all,
my toshiba laptop is like a fighter jet compare my 13" mac book pro 2010

Unfortunetly I dont own a MBP ((wish I did)) but I have used my friends unibody 15 inch one multiple times and realized the fan is quite loud. I dont mind it but meh. It's louder than my Alienware.

Its pretty much silent. Though I have to add that many of the laptops at my workplace (Non-Mac ones) are pretty much silent as well. The notebooks have come a long way.

MBP 13" 2009 model. Dead quiet. Literally.

My previous laptop was a 15" Toshiba with some AMD CPU from 2007. That thing was loud, hot, big, and heavy.

Before I got my MBP, I HATED using laptops because of the crappy track pads, the cumbersome size/weight and the fragility. But I enjoy using my 13" Pro more than my old desktop computer in terms of comfort.

Are 17" MBPs as quiet as the other Macbooks?

I didn't see any responses from 17" MBP owners. Are they pretty quiet too?

Hey guys, thanks for responding! I did love the descriptions of some of the non-mac computers. Sounds like or vibrates like: hair dryers, wind tunnels, washing machines, fighter jets, hahahaha. Sadly, I know what you guys mean!

Thanks again!
