Hi there :)

I went through a lot in deciding which will be my first tablet - ever. :)
And i came down to iPad Air. :)
(Xperia Z was my second option)

now...

I was so close to buying it, but i couldn't - because i read about all kinds of build-issues. From 'random screen cracking', overall low-quality build, fragility,...
(more at apple support iPad Air glass break)

Now i'm paranoid that i couldn't even use it; in fear of braking it,...

i mean - how truly is fragile this thing ?!

I already went and check for all kinds of screen protectors, covers and cases; Just to increase its durability, and be confident that it won't brake - that it will last for some significant amount of time.

But damn! I even didn't got this damn thing and i already looking into buying extensive protection, just so i could use it normally.

And this whole situation makes me feel - sad and surprised/fascinated.
How is possible that so pricey and high-end-targeted device is so fragile, and it could brake even upon its casual usage.
(like - cleaning it or semi-dropping/tossing it on to couch (ups! you had pen there? broken screen!))

I wouldn't even be here if this tablet was 200$ or something, i would expect those things,...

I would really like to get this device - i love it very much, it looks very personal - i like its size, its screen ratio, battery, performance, picture quality - really everything, but its durability frightens me.

so please - could someone explain me what is going on here ? :)

Thank you all upfront,

Tava

I think you are blowing up the problems in your mind. People only post in support forums when they have problems, while millions of people happily using the device never post, making these problems seem more frequent / widespread than they really are.

I currently have two iPad Airs. I do have screen protectors and cases on them, but they are inexpensive ones I bought from Amazon. I regularly toss them onto bed and sofa, and they don't crack. I've also had iPads 1-3, and none of them has ever broken from normal handling. Don't worry about it, go ahead nd get on and enjoy.

Owned my iPad Air since November mo issues what so ever and using Apple smart case. Best case imo.

No problem with my iPad Air that I've had since launch. I don't throw it around and have an Apple smart case on it but I don't treat it like it is fragile. I think the cases of cracked screens are extremely rare when you consider the millions that have been sold. It may be slightly more fragile than preceding models because it is thinner, but the decreased size and weight are part of what make it the extraordinary device that it is.

Thank you very much Night Spring, kaielement, bevsb2 and Abarth1200! :)

Now i just want to ask - what is absolutely the best screen protector for iPad Air ?
(i don't care for scratches or fingerprints, nor i care for picture quality - i just want ultimate impact durability (so i can throw it in the Air!))

:D

I toss it on the couch/bed fine with no issues with nothing on the device at all. Just don't throw it on the floor/table etc. and you should be fine.

It's plenty solid enough for regular tablet usage. The Air is lighter and more svelt than earlier generations but it's not anymore likely to be damaged than any other tablet. Seems like you really like the Air so I say go for it. Don't worry about durability. Just don't drop thing down the stairs or whatever. :D

Hah! Well, these are the ones I'm using, and I'm happy with them, but there are others out there that are just as good.

However, screen protectors don't really help with impact durability. They just keep your screen from getting scratched. For help with impact, get a case. Apple's Smart Case is good, but pricey. I tried a cheap TPU case from Amazon, and that is working out pretty well for me. Again, there are many good cases out there. So just try a few and pick one you like.

I have dropped my mini screen down onto hardwood floor from about 5/6 feet and nothing happened. If that isnt durable i dont know what is.

IPad Air Screen Brook First Month

I have had several iPads versions 1-4 and never had a screen break. Within the first week had a small crescent shaped crack in the upper left corner and ignored it. Today I opened it and had small hairline cracks across the screen. I always have it in the case and have not dropped it or abused it, other than carry it in my purse every day. Seems to me a product fault, and I am not a happy camper!

I had the random screen cracking a few weeks back. It was a perfect curve hairline crack that started from the bottom right corner to about two inches up. The ipad was never dropped. Thankfully I had a good employee at the Apple store who replaced it for me. I am extra careful with it now.

Get the AppleCare+ for it and you have two replacements for nominal fee over two years. I've had my Air since first week out. Use it without screen protector in tan Applecase. Not a scratch on it.
