How smart is Time Machine

I'm having a problem backing up after standby. Every time I look at the next back up it gets put back another hour. I was wondering if the hourly backups are done when it ads up to one hour total on the computer?

Also for some of you that the next backup = :- - I could be because your power adapter isn't connected to your notebook.
