obviously we are going by rumors and vague hints at upcoming things... but many seem convinced we will get an iPad upgrade in 5-6 months... do we really (think) apply is going to go back to annual upgrades or is it purely hope they will?

What is everyone’s thoughts on this? Again I know none of us know anything, but how sure are you, you, and yes you... on iPads getting a complete redesign and big spec bump just a year or slightly less than the last update?

*not a wishlist or best guess thread, but I genuinely wonder why so many are certain of an imminent huge iPad refresh.
:)

Given their long upgrade time between the original 12" IPP and the second iteration, I'm not sure where all this confidence is coming from.

The 9.7" IPP was more of a half step that they corrected with the 10.5"

I'd be surprised if there is anything before next fall time frame. Unless they update the base iPad, which would be around 12 months since the introduction, IMHO.

What I expect (fueled to an extent by wishful thinking)...

Spring = Updated iPad Mini with new and improved Apple Pencil.

That's it.

The dilemma for me will be if the updated Mini has a notch. I'll like the smaller form-factor, but... dat notch.

The info about 2018 iPad Pro refresh comes from a guy with an 8-year track record of accurately leaking Apple hardware info.

Whenever the updates come, they should be exciting. All rumors indicate a radical redesign of the ipad pros at least. So wether its March, June or next fall, something to look forward to. As an ipad mini user, i also wonder the fate of the mini. Since it will be pushing 3 years in 2018 since the last update, its safe to say we should find out if it will be discontinnued next year or if it lives on. 2018 is shapping up to be the year of the iPad.

iPad Pros were introduced last summer, and iPads generally last a long time. The iPad Pro has not really had a regular refresh schedule since the product has been released. I personally think it is unlikely that we get an iPad Pro update of any kind until late 2018 at the earliest. Other iPad refreshes could happen though.

In September I replaced my iPad Pro 9.7 with the new iPad Pro 10.5, and then just recently replaced my first-gen iPad Pro 12.9 with the second-gen iPad Pro 12.9, since I am uncertain about the likelihood of new iPads in the spring, given the past refresh time being over a year and a half. I use both iPads a lot and figured that I am very happy with the current specs on them and that they do what I need now, rather than waiting for something which may or may not come in March or April. The 10.5 iPad Pro goes with me on trips and from time to time around town as well. The iPad Pro 12.9 stays at home most of the time. I use both of them around the house at various times. In wintertime, it's delightful to stay in a warm bed with an iPad in the chilly mornings, and in the summer it's equally delightful to sit out on my deck with an iPad, usually the 12.9 with an Apple BT keyboard for faster and lengthier typing.

As for the iPad Mini, I stopped using my iPad Mini 2 not long after I had gotten my iPhone 6 Plus, and eventually sold the Mini after I realized it was just sitting around collecting dust while I used my other iPads and the iPhone all the time. The iPad Mini 2 had been great for carrying around in my purse, but once I had an iPhone with a larger screen I didn't feel the need for the Mini any more. I suspect that this has been the case for a lot of people and that probably sales of the iPad Mini 4 have been affected. I would be very surprised if there is an iPad Mini 5.

The way things are looking, Apple is going back to an annual refresh of the iPad. They've built momentum with iPad Pro and iOS 11.

Apple positions iPad Pro as a computer replacement. I don't see how they can accomplish that strategy without a new product every year.

Given how they treat ACTUAL computers - Mac mini and Mac Pro - I wouldn’t get too excited.

The notch is awesome.. it gets all of the needed but bulky info where it should be, out of the way.

Make it so...a Mini with Pencil capabilities. I’d be annoyed by the notch in Procreate, but otherwise, not sure.

As far as folks speculating updates, who knows?

Apple's grand vision revolves around the iPhone. It's pretty clear products further away from iPhone and iOS receive less attention.

Very true, but you still can’t create apps for iOS, in iOS. Until that happens, you’d think they’d pay SOME attention to the non-portable Macs.
