Unlike the intel macs, you can't disable that autoboot function that boots the computer whenever you press a key or the trackpad. So how am i supposed to clean up the keyboard without the computer booting and it doing all sorts of weird stuff? Apple needs to add the autoboot disable to the m1 macs and make it an option somewhere in the system preferences

Can’t you just run the battery down to 0 and do what you got to do?
Lock your screen with a password and clean your keyboard without worrying.
It can't do anything weird after booting unless you accidentally happen to type the correct password while cleaning the keyboard.
That's risky since if depleted empty below a certain threshold BMS may not charge the battery anymore.
That's one implementation that's more annoying than useful and Apple should allow a way to disable it.
I see.. learned something new today. I had occasionally run down my devices down to dead battery in the past, never had a problem. Maybe I just got lucky..
Don't worry. Modern battery management systems (like Apple's) do not let you discharge to a dangerous level. When you go to "0" and your laptop shuts off, there is still 10% or so of charge in the battery.
I use this little app called KeyboardCleanTool. Works wonders for us here in the IT Department

Newer models now also turn on once you press any key, not just the power key. It's easiest just to lock the screen then wipe it down (and remove Apple Watch if you have one).

It is so annoying the any key or just open the device and it auto-boots. I hate it. Why have a power button if any key or just opening the device will turn it on. Sometimes I wipe my keyboard down when I shut the device down before I close the lid and it boots up. It has just turned on while it is in my laptop bag and I just wish I had a choice. A single toggle switch in the OS to enable autoboot or use power button instead would be such a simple thing to implement. Still I love the computer but that autoboot on any key or when opening is really annoying to me.
When I open my Surface Laptop 4 I expect it to turn on and I stare at it and nothing happens and then I remember this is a Surface so I need to use the power button. Lol.

I am surprised no comments on this? Quick, easy, no need for another app. I have been doing this for years, the worst that happens is get get a bunch of characters in your password field, but an Escape key hit when done eliminates it. This works great for me. Plus I have lock set when I drag the cursor to the lower left corner, so it's so fast - slide cursor, wipe, done.
