How the new family sharing (for photo) exactly works ?

The new family sharing for photo is simply a streaming photo shared ?
So original remains on Mac and if other users in my family wants to edit it have to download the pic on his Mac and the edits are not update on my Mac ?
Or all the pics shared are upload to Apple server and every edits are propagate to all family members as well ?
One more: photos reduces the iCloud space available ?
