I was looking at some old Apple websites and found this pic. Thought I'd share as it's quite amusing!

Yes times have changed, although that was true back then, and still now in the top of the line quad G5, but the reason for the switch is that the PowerPC doesn't have much of a future with Apple.

IBM doesn't seem to care about creating computer processors now.

Oh, I appreciate that it was true at the time. Kudos to Apple really for realising that the time was right now to switch and for getting on with.

I'd forgotten the daft intel ads too until I saw the pic.

Ahhh I understand what you mean, yeah I remember thinking those ads were sweet.

I don't think its true to say that the Quad G5s are faster than anything Intel can offer right now, its just that we don't exactly see many Intel Quad processored systems.

You may be right, but you would think that if a dual core duo processor was faster than a quad G5 they would put it into it....

of course the lack of 64 bit might be a reason they are holding back.

Also, consider that the Quad G5 is from the fall to.

I'm pretty sure they're holding out for 64 bit for the PowerMacs because there are quite a few people out there who want more than 4GB of RAM in their PowerMacs. Intel is also due to release an actual desktop variant based on the Yonah design and I'm guessing it will run quite a bit faster and hotter than the Core chips. The extra heat wouldn't be a problem in a desktop sized case. The Intel based Powermacs are going to be seriously *fast*.

Oh I agree, what I was trying to say is that the Fall G5's hold their own quite nicely with the brand new tech Intel has in their chips right now.

Yeah that is true. Those G5 quads are simply wonderful machines, I wish they had one in the reseller store near me so that I could play with one!! :(
