Hi,

So I have over 400GB of Time Machine backups but I want to copy some files directly from the backup directory from the external hard drive to my Mac HD. When I select the backup folder there is 'no content', the folders appear empty. If I press the time machine icon, it will want to create a new TM backup system so all my old data is lost.

Is there any way to open old TM backups on a new Mac without setting the External HDD up as a new TM. I have managed to copy files from the external that were just copied over from the hard drive...

Thank You

You can mount the drive and manually go in and grab the files (via Finder), or if you hold the OPTION key down while you click the Time Machine icon on the menu bar, you should see the text change to "Browse Other Time Machine Disks"
