I purchased a second hand iPhone 4 while traveling in Australia last August.

The phone was originally bought in the USA and was running on iOS 4.3.3.

I decided to upgrade the iOS (6.1.3?) yesterday as it was quite dated and I couldn't download all of the apps which I wanted as many now require at least iOS 5.

Once the upgrade had finished, I tried to setup the phone. The phone connected to the wifi but then it said that I couldn't activate the phone as it didn't have the original SIM card.

I am unsure how to solve the problem? The phone was unlocked before I decided to update it as I used different SIM cards in Australia, New Zealand and the USA.

Now I am locked out of the phone I am unable to access the IMEI code too.

Please can anyone help me?

Thanks,

Amy

If the phone is unlocked you should be able to activate it with any carrier's sim, even deactivated sims.

Just put in the sim, make sure you are on a Wifi network (especially if the sim is deactivated, as without Internet access it cannot activate) and activate the phone.

If the phone fails to activate, it may still be locked to a carrier.

Thank you for your response.

How do I know if the sim is still locked by the carrier? Is it possible for me to get the phone unlocked even though it is not activated? I am also unsure of the carrier as I did not buy the phone from new. I have come across a lot of posts which say about jailbreaking and hacktivating, but I don't really want to do this if possible.
