My friend has bought a second hand 3GS, jailbroken and unlocked to Vodafone UK. It’s quite slow and clogged up with all the stuff that the previous owner has put on, so as the new jailbreak has now been released, we’re going to restore and upgrade from 3.1.2 to 4.0.1 (no SHSH blobs).

The trouble is that as it’s second hand, so there’s no original sim. To my knowledge after the restore the phone will need a sim in it to activate.

How do I get past this?

Would I be able to activate it using my iPhone's O2 sim, then jailbreak, unlock with Ultrasn0w, then revert to his carrier, T-Mobile?

I'd be doing this on his laptop, with his copy of iTunes if that makes any difference?
